Gucci spreads 1980s fashion inspiration

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- If dull chats about the economy make you crave glorious abandon, look no further than Frida Giannini's autumn-winter 2009-10 collection to feel hopeful again.

At Taipei's Gucci Fashion Show on Friday night, fashion-goers looked enviously to Gucci creative director's 1980s-style power dressing, bringing out broad-shouldered jackets, high-necked blouses and careful pleats.

Also, Cheryl Yang (楊謹華), Janine Chang (張鈞甯), and Zhang Rong Rong (張榕容) managed their way to the front of the cameras, wearing Gucci's outfits that were glam rock in the extreme and worn with the spikiest heels ever.

The basic palette was dark but black tops or dresses were offset with flashes of blue, purple and fuchsia pink while other fabrics were shiny and sparkly, giving out a disco feel.

Inspired by a glittering, glamorous time, Yang, who starred last year in “1895” – a Taiwanese film based on the start of the Japanese occupation of Taiwan in 1895 – chose evening wear that shimmered, with short crystal studded dungarees, and guaranteed her a place in the limelight.

Not to be outdone, Taiwanese actress Janine Chang opted for an '80s-style micro-mini skirt and princess-like sleeves. The zipper on the front of her dress could be pulled and changed into yet another loosely style dress, she said.

Powerful, even aggressive, there was no doubt about Taiwanese actress Zhang Rong Rong's dedication to the Gucci party, who remarked that it took her a while to get used to her super-tight pants, but they did make her body proportion look nicer.

Vic Chou (周渝民), Dylan Kuo (郭品超), and Eddie Peng (彭于晏) further adopted that Gucci attitude of “old is back with a vengeance.”

A member of the famous Taiwanese boy band F4, Vic Chou wore a Gucci leopard sweater and glossy pants, saying that the whole outfit featured some “low-key luxury” which is different from his previous style – Vic has starred in many Taiwanese dramas. As long as he feels comfortable with his clothes, however, he remarked that “there is no limit to his budget.”

Taiwanese actor, singer and model Dylan Kuo, on the other hand, attracted other male models' attention with Gucci's leather boots. He told reporters that he likes his look today and often spends some money on luxury outfits.

Also, actor Eddie Peng, who just finished his movie “Hear Me” (聽說), right on time for the Deaflympics Taipei, was wearing a woolen check suit with a tie, showing that the '80s movement has certainly moved forward and is coming back.
