Kenting's clear waters attract Macanese diver

I fly to Taiwan a lot, mostly for work. I have been to Taipei several times to work with local ensembles in music festivals and concerts. My recent trip to the island, however, concerns career planning of a different kind.

I went to the southern resort of Kenting for scuba diving in March. The trip was both recreational and professional in nature, for I have been giving serious thought to a career as a dive instructor.

I began my ongoing scuba diving training in Malaysia. They have some of the most famous training agencies and diving hotspots in the world there. Some of them are quite remote, literally in the middle of the ocean. The diving spot I went to in Kenting is more accessible yet the scenery underwater is not less exotic. My guide and I played with a sea turtle, almost touching it, for quite a while.

What also impressed me were the local people. The owner of my B&B is a professed surf aficionado. On top of being really friendly, he was very forthcoming about his affection for the sea. One night during my stay, he took me to Cape Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan. There he was, facing the dark waves, telling me: “You don't have to be afraid of the sea.” What a character!

I enjoyed my time in Kenting. I would have stayed longer had I not paid for my accommodation in Taipei in advance. I am thinking of returning to the waves of southern Taiwan in the future.
