American beef or Taiwanese pork: Which is real hazard?

Chiayi City, Taiwan -- American beef or Taiwanese pork — which is safer to stay on the menu? Last month, at least 160 piglets in Taiwan displayed flu symptoms, and some of them have now been confirmed as testing positive for the H1N1 flu.

According to health officials, the virus is killed by a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius or above, but the temperature in Taiwan is certainly below that!

People are being told that there is nothing to worry about “well-cooked” pork, but how about the risk of the airborne virus being transmitted by handling pork?

There have been people in Taiwan who have died from H1N1 flu. It is important for the government to ensure that local pork contains absolutely no viruses, and also that the bio-security monitoring of pigs, or even tighter surveillance measures, is in process.
