MOE planning flexible study for classes affected by H1N1

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Most medical workers have received shots of vaccinations for A(H1N1) flu immunization while the Ministry of Education is planning more flexible measures for schooling to cope with the rising number of classes suspended by the epidemic.

Major hospitals around the island said vaccines were given to their own staff and victims of the floods in southern Taiwan on a priority basis. Some hospitals at areas unaffected the by flood devastation in August said their vaccination work went more smoothly as there are no flood victims in their region.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) urged parents to take their youngsters to the hospitals for the shots as early as possible for protection.

With over 1,000 classes canceled as a result of the A(H1N1) swine flu, MOE officials said schools should in principle make up the class and hours lost.

But with possible surge in the number of infected cases as the temperature moves lower, MOE officials will hold a meeting on Thursday with officials from county and municipal officials to discuss a more flexible measures to allow deduction in the make-up hours.

The officials said that despite the temporary suspension of classes, the teachers should still give their students assignments for self-study at home with the help of their family.

Details will be worked at the forthcoming meeting, they said.
