German engineer convicted in hall collapse

TRAUNSTEIN, Germany -- A German court says a civil engineer is guilty of negligent homicide for his work in constructing an ice rink that collapsed suddenly in 2006. The Traunstein state court has given the engineer an 18-month suspended sentence for his role in the accident that killed 15 people on Jan. 2, 2006. Most of them were children.

Court officials identified the engineer only as Walter G. as is customary in German proceedings. During the trial he admitted to miscalculating the load-carrying capacity of the roof that collapsed under heavy, wet snow.
