Germans win pairs in world figure skating championshipsAP GOTEBORG, Sweden -- European figure skating champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany won their first world pairs championship on Wednesday.
March 21, 2008, 12:00 am TWN China’s Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao captured the silver medal, and Canadians Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison the bronze. The Germans’ routine was not perfect. They botched the side-by-side triple salchow when he fell and she touched down for a one-point deduction. But a gorgeous, difficult lift with Savchenko held aloft as if diving toward the ice helped them earn 130.86 points in the free program for a 202.86 total. Zhang and Zhang scored 197.82 while the Canadians, who finished second in the free, had 192.78. It is the first time Germany has won the pairs since Savchenko’s and Szolkowy’s coach Ingo Steuer with his partner Mandy Woetzel in 1997.
