Yahoo! says ‘sorry’ to Mayor Ma over blunder

While revising its web page on Friday, Yahoo! accidentally displayed on the Internet one of its fabricated news headline that read “Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou assassinated,” which prompted immediate public attention.

After discovering its mistake, the Internet company issued a public apology yesterday morning. According to Yahoo!, the web page is used to test one of the company’s “emergency news” service and was put up for public display by accident.

Yahoo! made clear that the headline was chosen with the purpose to represent a breaking news story and does not carry any political insinuations. The general manager of the Internet company, who was in the U.S. when the incident occurred, telephoned Ma to present the company’s deepest apologies.

The company promised to strengthen its internal management in order to avoid similar episode from occurring again in the future.

Ma stated that, since the company has taken steps to announce that it was at fault, he will not pursue the matter further. Ma expressed that the mistake did not cause him any inconvenience. “My mother did not even notice it,” he joked, adding that his bodyguards might have been troubled by it. “I even dug into the pockets of my jacket to see if I could find bullets,” quipped Ma when being asked about his reaction.
