Taiwan allies promote tourism at fair

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Several of Taiwan's diplomatic allies from Central America and the Caribbean are participating in the Taipei International Travel Fair (ITF), offering information and incentives to attract local residents to their countries.

“The thing about Saint Kitts is that you can have the natural and exclusive vacation and in that it is still very unspoiled, both Saint Kitts and Nevis. We still have maintained our natural environment,” Jasmine Huggins, charge d'affaires of the Embassy of Saint Christopher and Nevis in Taipei, told the Central News Agency at the fair Saturday.

“We are not so overrun with tourists yet, so the person who travels to Saint Kitts can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing vacation,” she added.

Huggins said she hopes to attract more Taiwanese tourists to her country, which is rich in natural, cultural and historical attractions, ranging from Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park — a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site — to hot spring and crystal clear water along the coastline.

The best time for Taiwanese tourists to visit the Caribbean country is during winter, when there are Christmas celebrations, carnivals and other activities, Huggins said.

Several Central American allies, including Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, are also participating in the fair.

Lucas Yeh, assistant director of the Central America Trade Office in Taipei, told CNA that due to a lack of knowledge of the area and language barriers, travel packages to Central America are not as attractive as those to Europe, which are priced in a similar range.

Yeh noted, however, that these Central American countries should be of interest to experienced travelers and cultural enthusiasts.

Guatemala and Honduras are rich in Mayan civilization relics, while Nicaragua and Costa Rica are known for their volcanic geography, according to Yeh.

For those who are interested in natural scenery, the world's second largest barrier reef is located along the coast of Belize and Honduras.
