Man stabs, kills own mother, older brother

A 27-year-old Pingtung City man stabbed his mother and brother to death and severely wounded his father early yesterday morning, telling local police that he had harbored a desire to kill his family since he was in middle school.

The alleged killer, surnamed Huang, cited his motive behind the murders as his pent-up anger at the strict upbringing he endured under his parents' guardianship. According to Huang, he was constantly beaten and berated — punishment he claimed his older brother escaped.

After losing his job in 2008, Huang was, for a long period of time, unemployed and living at home. According to police reports, he allegedly purchased a switchblade last year in Kaohsiung City with the intent to kill his family.

Police investigations revealed that at roughly 5.20 a.m. yesterday, Huang used the knife to stab his older brother, with whom he shared a room, in the neck and arm, causing him to scream in alarm. Huang's father rushed into the room to yell at Huang, who in turn, knifed him in the chest. His mother called the police on her cell phone even when Huang ordered her to stop. He responded by stabbing her in the neck, chest and abdomen.

The emergency call went through and police arrived at the site of the tragedy to find Huang in the kitchen in a daze. They arrested him immediately and sent his wounded family members to a nearby hospital, where the mother and older brother succumbed to their wounds.

Huang was charged with murder and transferred to the prosecutors' office.

The Huang family did not have any record of violence or abuse. Neighbors of Huang told police that they never overheard any fights. Police investigations revealed that the suspect had never exhibited any known signs of violence, has no record of drug use and his medical records show no signs of mental abnormalities. Huang is currently being subjected to a psychological evaluation, police said.

Huang told police in his confession, that he had been beaten and humiliated by his parents since middle school; the resultant pressure caused him insomnia, he said, which was around the same time he started plotting to kill his parents and older brother.

In light of the family tragedy, police urged the public to seek help with relevant social groups if they ever encounter unmanageable behavior or conflicts within the home.
