Tourism Bureau offers cash prizes for Taitung biking challenge

The China Post news staff--The Tourism Bureau (觀光局) announced yesterday that its annual East Coast biking challenge is scheduled for April 1. More than NT$222,000 in cash prizes are up for grabs this year.

The “$uper Rider Challenge,” now in its fourth year, is operated by the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration (東管處) to promote biking as a low-carbon travel alternative.

The 2012 challenge is set for April 1 at Taitung's Jialulan recreational area (加路蘭遊憩區).

The event includes a non-competitive 100 km and a “gold rush” race. For the first time in the event's history, the “gold rush” race will be divided by age and will include an “elite” division.

From Jialulan recreational area, bikers follow scenic trails to and from the “Three Fairies” Bridge (三仙台).

Cash prizes range from NT$1000 to NT$30,000. The total prize value exceeds NT$222,000, said the Tourism Bureau in a press conference yesterday.

Participation is capped at 600 people. Both domestic and international visitors may register for the event.
