Taipei starts countdown to 2010 flora expo

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Hau Lung-bin, Mayor of Taipei City, announced yesterday the opening of the Taipei flora expo in a year or exactly 365 days.

The 2010 Taipei International Gardening and Horticultural Exposition is slated to run from Nov. 6, 2010, though Apr. 25, 2011. The event will take place in 14 venues in the city.

Hau invited model Lin Chi-ling to be an ambassador to help promote the capital's landmark event.

Lin stunned the audience when she appeared in a dress ornamented with pink roses and light yellow orchids at a press conference in a newly-constructed pavilion for the expo. Hau represented sunflowers, said Lin, that give off vigorous spirits and energy while she was more like a tulip that was content.

The top model wanted to deliver positive messages to everyone.

Following the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Taipei City is expected to bring Taiwan to the world's attention again.

The expo should attract more than eight million people from home and abroad and bring in estimated revenue of NT$16.8 billion.

Hau believed the expo would increase tourism and boost local economic development.
