Students' winter break in 2010 extended to 32 days

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The education minister announced yesterday that the upcoming winter vacation, starting from Jan. 21, will last up to 32 days. As regulated, students from senior high school and below should have a winter vacation of 21 days. The Central Personnel Administration (CPA) had previously reported winter vacation starting from Jan. 21 until Feb. 10.

However, since the upcoming Chinese New Year starts from Feb. 13, officials decided to make the vacation 32 full days until Feb. 21 to help families plan the holidays and to correspond to CPA's planned schedule.

All schools from senior high and below will follow the same schedule, said the Ministry of Education. To make up the missed classes on Feb. 11, 12 and 19, students will have classes on threev Saturdayvs in the next semester.

To tackle any possible swine flu outbreak during the vacation, the Central Epidemics Command Center is hoping to get elementary school students and all high school students vaccinated for H1N1 by the end of November.

Health officials are calling on private institutions and cram schools to reinforce epidemic control efforts during the break. According to the government's 3-2-5 guidelines, some 538 classes have been suspended as of Thursday, down from 1,109 in October.
